Hospitalized former leader of the Democratic Party of Italy

Pierre Luigi Bersani, who stood at the helm of the Democratic Party of Italy until April 2013, was urgently hospitalized on Sunday in an extremely difficult situation.

The day before yesterday morning, a 62-year-old politician himself appeared in a local hospital in the city of Piacenza complaining of poor health, and in particular, a severe headache. Doctors immediately conducted a computed tomographic study, which revealed that the former leader of the leading political forces in Italy has a serious illness associated with brain activity. According to local media, the policy required an emergency operation, so Bersani was sent directly from the emergency room of the hospital in Piacenza by ambulance to the Maggiore hospital in Parma.

Bersani was sent to the neurosurgical department of the Parma hospital, where doctors performed an angiographic study of cerebral vessels. It soon became known that the politician had a subarachnoid hemorrhage in the brain, and the doctors made a final decision to immediately schedule an operation. His wife, Daniela, and later the daughters Elisa and Margherita, who were “on duty” in the neurosurgery department while the former head of the Italian Democratic Party was on the operating table, arrived at the hospital with Bersani.

However, according to Corriere della Sera, today it became known that the surgical intervention went as well as possible. The state of the 62-year-old politician has already stabilized, he regained consciousness, and he was even allowed to speak with his wife. Now his life is no longer in danger, and doctors make only the most favorable forecasts. During a consultation of doctors, it was noted: despite the fact that "the night was uneasy, all the patient’s vital signs returned to normal."

Members of the once-Democratic Party, including its current leader, Matteo Renzi, came to support Bersani in the hospital. Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta also expressed his support for Bersani by phone with his wife Daniela. Letta promised to visit the politician when he gets better.

Bersani's successful political career began as far back as 1993, when he joined the Italian Communist Party. From 1994 to 1996, the politician served as president of one of the country's largest provinces, Emilia-Romagna. From 1996 to 2001, Bersani managed to "sit" in the chair of the Minister of Industry, the Minister of Commerce and Tourism and the Minister of Transport. Also, the politician was a member of the European Parliament more than once; he participated in the work of the commission on economic and monetary policy. And in October 2009, Bersani was elected leader of the Democratic Party of the country, and in April 2013 he resigned.
