Bardolino - Holidays on Lake Garda

The city of Bardolino is a famous Italian resort located in the Veneto region, in the administrative district of Verona, on the eastern shore of Lake Garda (Lago di Garda), at the foot of the Alpine Mountains (Alpi). Bardolino is a beautiful city surrounded by low mountains, representing an unusual combination of representatives of the plant world: olive trees, orchids, pine forests, vineyards.

Closed by mountains from the winds, the city is famous for its mild Mediterranean climate with air temperatures even in the winter months not lower than 0 ° C, healing air, good for health.

This resort city is also known as a place for producing red wine of the highest class, named after the city.

Story

Historians and archaeologists have established that the settlement on the site of the modern city of Bardolino was formed during the heyday of Ancient Rome. Even then, these places were famous for premium wine, sung by famous ancient Roman figures.

The foundation of the city dates back to the 10th century, when a fortress was built here by order of the Italian Berengario. In the XII century, Bardolino proves its independence and becomes a commune. After that, it becomes in the power of a noble family of Scaligers (della Scala) from Verona (from 1260 to 1387), then it is included in the structure of the Venetian Republic first (Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia), then - Austria (from 1797). Only in 1866 was Bardolino part of Italy.

Sights

Bardolino and its surroundings have long attracted the attention of the nobility, representatives of the authorities and the church. Palace and monastery complexes were built here, preserved to this day.

The streets, squares, buildings of the old resort city can tell a lot about its history. The oldest buildings date back to the 9th century: the temples of San Vito and San Zeno. The XI-XII century includes the construction of the monastery of St. Columbus (Columbanus). In the XIV century, the Scaliger castle appeared here. In the XIX century, a cathedral dedicated to Nicholas the Wonderworker was built. The city presents a gallery of luxurious villas of the XIX century: Villa Raimondi, Villa Marzano, etc.

Church of the Holy North

The Church of the Holy North (San Severin) is one of the oldest in the city, built in the X century by order of King Berengar of Italy as a chapel to the parish church located in the city of Garda. The church was rebuilt in the XI-XII centuries, then it acquired the characteristic features of the Romanesque style. The interior has preserved to this day numerous frescoes made by unknown authors in the XIII century, with images of Saints and the End of the World.

Church of Santa Maria

Cisano di Bardolino (Cisano di Bardolino) - the church of St. Mary, another building of the X century, erected on the site of an older temple of the pre-Christian era.

From the time of construction, a bas-relief, installed on the outside of the church, depicting scenes from the life of medieval knights, as well as an eagle, horse and fish, has been preserved. A striking sign of the Romanesque style in the appearance of this building is a double-leaf window with picturesque ornaments above the hinged portal on the front of the building. The church was rebuilt in the XI-XII centuries, and was also complemented by interior painting. This church is famous for the fresco "Madonna and Child" dating back to the 16th century.

Wine museum

There are several museums in the city. These are the Museum of Hunting and Fishing (Il museo della caccia e della pesca), the Museum of Olive Oil (Museo d'oliva), etc.

One of the attractions of Bardolino is the Wine Museum (Museo del vino), founded in 1870 by the Zeni brothers and representing an interesting exhibition on the history of winemaking. In the museum you can get acquainted with the technology of wine production, as well as evaluate its taste during a tasting in the cellars of the museum.

Wines of Bardolino

There are very popular legends that the wine produced in Bardolino was very loved and left good reviews by emperors Marcus Porcius Cato Major, Gaius Iulius Caesar, Senator Flavius ​​Magnus Aurelius Cassiodor (Flavius Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus Senator), poet Gaius Valerius Catullus.

Wine is called the same as the village in which the winery is located - Bardolino. Wine is actively sold all over the world.

Since 2001, the highest category of Italian wines includes dry red wine Bardolino DOCG Classico Superiore. This highest category is assigned to wine varieties traditionally produced in a certain territory and corresponding to strict criteria of expert evaluation.

Young wine Bardolino DOCG Classico Superiore with the name "Novello" is pink-red, but over time it becomes dark cherry and pomegranate.

Connoisseurs prefer young wine of this brand, with a light and delicate bouquet, slightly astringent, slightly bitter.

Grapes for the production of famous wine grows on the hillsides around Lake Garda. Exquisite varieties are grown here:

  • Corvina - a variety that gives the drink an intense deep shade and density;
  • Rondinella - grapes characterized by an unusual grassy tart taste;
  • Molinara - grapes with a pronounced spicy smell.

In addition to Bardolino DOCG Classico Superiore, other wines are also produced in Bardolino:

  • Bianco di custoza - light and fresh white dry wine with a complex velvety bouquet and a delicate smell, which is made from a mixture of several varieties of white grapes growing on the soil with admixtures of sand and limestone;
  • Lugana - dry and semi-dry white wine from Trebbiano di Lugana grapes, with aroma and rich taste of green apple, hints of almond, lime;
  • Soave DOC Classico - exquisite white wine from the variety Garganega, growing on soil saturated with volcanic rocks;
  • Valpolicella - red wine of intense thick color and amazing aroma from several grape varieties growing on the soil with basalt layers, with an abundance of limestone and clay;
  • Bardolino Chiaretto Serenissima - rosé wine with a bright fresh aroma, fruity notes, a delicate spicy flavor of cherries and raspberries.

Sports, entertainment and holidays

The location of the city on the shores of Lake Garda makes it the center of sports life. A variety of sports are popular here:

You can get to Bardolino from the airport in Verona by train or bus - this is not so comfortable, but sometimes a little cheaper.

Take the train to Peschiera del Garda station, and from there go to Bardolino by bus. A one-day public transport ticket costs 3-5 EUR, and a 7-day ticket ("Settimanale") costs 15 EUR.
